Bringing Affordable Housing to Communities Throughout Oregon

One of most widespread challenges facing Oregonians throughout the state is the availability of quality, affordable housing. Nearly half of all Oregonians spend 30% or more of their income to cover rent and utilities, and over 300,000 families suffer from some from inadequate, poor quality, and overly expensive housing. But while affordable and quality housing challenges nearly every community in Oregon, the is no single solution. An approach that works in Portland will not necessarily work for coastal communities. Or for a rural community along the I-84 corridor. Or in the towns and cities along Highway 97. So each housing project must be tailored to meet the needs of each community.

Hacienda Community Development Corporation is one of the most successful affordable housing developers in the Metro region. Its approach to meeting a community’s housing begins by partnering with local decision-makers, land owners, and other leaders to develop the right approach to meet housing needs. To help its residents live full and prosperous lives, along with housing it provides child care, education, and technical assistance for small businesses.

With over 1500 unit in the greater Portland metro area, in 2020 Hacienda hired me to explore opportunities to bring its full-service affordable housing approach to communities throughout Oregon.
